As I finalize packing my truck for the next few weeks of turkey hunting, and pack in some downtime reading, I cant help but notice a lot of "Rules of Turkey Hunting" articles out there.
This is where I share my rules with you...
#1. Saftey First!! Absopositivley a must. Know your target, careful with the colors you wear. Now, on with the other rules.
#2. There are no "Rules" If I have someone tell me one more time that I call too much, not enough, to excited, to subtle, etc...I am gonna scream. Fact is, the turkey is the one dictating our calling, not us. We may think we are, but dont kid yourself. With whatever style of calling you chose to use at that particular moment, you are trying to find a turkey with a similar personality trait.
I have called in birds by emptying my vest, sounding like a gaggle of nasty pottymouthed hens of all ages. I have also called them in with a leaf scratch, a decoy, and very little purring. The bird and the situation will dictate how you call to him.
#3. Have fun with it. The hunt, the govble, the bird itself is the reason I hunt. It's why I HAVE to hunt them. And regardless of whether or not I fill my tag, I enjoy every single minute of it! I think that next to safety, this is the most important rule.
#4 Do NOT be afraid to try everything. And anything. You never know what will work, or when it will work.
#5 More time in the woods will result in not just learning the grounds you hunt, but the birds you hunt.
So there you are. My rules. Now get out there, and write your own rules!!
Happy hunting!
